The return of the fans to the stadiums for the new season in the Bundesliga is a political decision, not a medical one, according to a German virologist. Dr Alexander Dalpke of the University of Dresden told the DPA that completely ruling out COVID-19 contamination in stadiums would only be possible if fans remained behind bars.
`Ultimately, this is a risk assessment that needs to be justified politically, not virologically, ` Dalpke said.
`Legally protected rights, such as protection against human infection, must be weighed against other important things in social life. Major sporting events play an important social role, ` he added.
While the number of those infected is rising again amid fears of a second wave of coronavirus, a spokesman for Germany`s interior ministry in charge of sports does not rule out the return of a limited number of fans when the new season begins in September.
