Draw tipsters German virologist: The return of fans to the stadiums is a political rather than a medical decision

The return of the fans to the stadiums for the new season in the Bundesliga is a political decision, not a medical one, according to a German virologist. Dr Alexander Dalpke of the University of Dresden told the DPA that completely ruling out COVID-19 contamination in stadiums would only be possible if fans remained behind bars.

`Ultimately, this is a risk assessment that needs to be justified politically, not virologically, ` Dalpke said.

`Legally protected rights, such as protection against human infection, must be weighed against other important things in social life. Major sporting events play an important social role, ` he added.

While the number of those infected is rising again amid fears of a second wave of coronavirus, a spokesman for Germany`s interior ministry in charge of sports does not rule out the return of a limited number of fans when the new season begins in September. Last season ended witho ut fans after a two-month break. The German Football League has created a concept for returning a certain number of fans under strict safety and hygiene rules. The last word on how many fans will be released at each stadium will be taken by the local health authorities of each club.
